NIALL Quinn is expected to make a formal offer for a controlling stake in Sunderland on Monday after the club's board last night confirmed they were in takeover talks with the former Republic of Ireland international.

After first approaching chairman Bob Murray at the beginning of the season, Quinn has spent the last two months assembling a consortium of backers in his native Ireland that is rumoured to include former Manchester United shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus.
