NEWCASTLE'S search for a new striker was dealt a crushing double blow last night when Darren Bent signed a new four-year deal at Charlton just hours after West Ham boss Alan Pardew insisted there was "no chance" of Dean Ashton moving to Tyneside this summer.

With another transfer target, Dirk Kuyt, close to completing a 10m move to Liverpool, Magpies manager Glenn Roeder now finds himself back at square one as he attempts to bolster a strikeforce that has been stripped bare following the departure of Alan Shearer and a long-term injury to Michael Owen.
