A FORTNIGHT ago, we were looking at the lost community of Riseburn, a three-sided square of terraced houses with a Methodist chapel in the middle. It was threequarters of a mile south of Middridge, near Shildon.

Bob Giles' mother, Roseanne Burke, was born in Riseburn in 1916. "A ll of her life she was ashamed of being born there, " he says.
