DURHAM'S bid to be named the UK's first City of Culture has received a massive boost, with the man tasked with picking a winner telling the county to "Go for it".

Phil Redmond, the former Brookside producer credited with making a success of Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture in 2008, was on Wednesday appointed chairman of the judging panel for the inaugural UK prize.
