THE Chancellor yesterday ordered lenders to cut rip-off fees of up to [pounds]2,500 to arrange a mortgage, warning that homeowners were being "taken advantage of".

Alistair Darling said he was very concerned that hardpressed borrowers coming off fixed-rate deals this year were being forced to pay arrangement fees higher than the true cost of the work.
