A HIGHWAYS boss has defended his department after critics branded a traffic calming scheme as a waste of money when a road was made too narrow.

Part of a "gateway" built during a 100,000 scheme to slow down traffic on the A170 approaching Helmsley, in North Yorkshire, had to be dug up because farmers with large machinery were unable to get through.
